Detailed Itinerary Fo 5 -Day Birding Sahara Desert and Tagdilt Track

Day 1: airport - Merzouga

Your 4 days tour Errachidia to tagdilt track and back will begin with pick up directly to Merzouga because most of the flights that land in Moulay Ali Cherif Airport in Errachidia arrives at night and overnight stay at Hotel in Merzouga.

Day 2 : Explore Merzouga area – Erg Chebbi - Rissani

We have a full day to explore the Erg Chebbi dunes and surrounding gravel plains and palm oases. This is the best area to search for many Saharan specialties and northwestern Africa endemics. Our long list of targets will include Crowned and Spotted Sandgrouse, several larks like Greater Hoopoe and Bar-tailed, African Desert Warbler, Fulvous Chatterer, and the ghostly desert-adapted Desert Sparrow. Sometimes, with the assistance of local nomadic people, we manage to locate the incredibly cryptic Egyptian Nightjar during the day. Possible raptors include Lanner Falcon and a variety of migrants. By the time the day is done, we hope to have seen the vast majority of the area’s specialties, and to have truly experienced this beautiful corner of the endless vastness of the Sahara Desert . Day 3: Merzouga - Goulmima - Todra gorge - Tagdilt track - Boumalne Dades

After an early look at the desert around our hotel, we will head west and stop at a site to search for Scrub Warbler, Spectacled Warbler and Trumpeter Finch. Next we travel westwards and stop at todra Gorge for Tristram’s Warbler, Black Wheatear, Blue Rock-Thrush, Rock Dove, Crag Martin and possible Beneli’s Eagle ! then to Tagdilt Track.The stony desert here is at quite a high altitude . Larks are well Represented with Thekla, Desert Short-Toed, Thick-Billed and Temmink’s Larks, Desert and Red-Rumped Wheatears. Dinner and Accommodation in Boumalne Dades

Day 4: Boumalne du Dades - Tagdilt Track - Ddaes Gorge

Today we will start early, to head to the Tagdilt Track. This is without doubt one of the top areas for birding in the Southern of Morocco. Excellent chances exist for seeing Red-rumped Wheatear, Thekla Lark, Trumpeter Finch, Temminck’s Lark, Short-toed Lark, Cream-coloured Courser and the highly nomadic Thick-billed Lark. If the heat allows, we will dedicate most of our day to exploring this area, then we visit a rocky canyon searching for Maghreb Wheatear, Desert Lark and  Pharaoh Eagle . Day 5: Boumalne du Dades - Goulmima - Errachidia airport

Transfer day from Boumalne to Errachidia . we will search again for the majestic Desert Owl and the Lanner. By the late morning we will continue heading Errachidia. Along the way, we will explore some of the numerous ouadis (seasonal dry rivers) and large palm groves to look for some emblematic species of the region such as the Streaked Scrub-Warbler and Desert Lark, Bar-tailed Lark , Greater Hoopoe Lark, We will arrive in Errachidia in afternoon where the trip will come to its end

Accommodation: We stay in a selection of comfortable hotel, all rooms are en-suite.

Food: All hotels provide a simple breakfast typical of Morocco, consisting of fresh bread, butter, honey and jam. Fruit juice and tea or coffee is also available. For lunch we will have picnic lunches when out in the field. Evening meals will be a mixture of local and international dishes.

Walking:The tour is not strenuous. Leisurely walking, very occasionally over moderately rough terrain, is the only physical requirement on most days. Most birding is done close to our vehicle, though we will need to walk to see mountain species, and some exertion will be required in mountain environments. There will be the option to stay close to the vehicle, should anyone wish to go back.
